Sometimes the best stories begin with a walk in the bush.

As our lives become increasingly connected to screens, spending time outdoors offers children and adults the chance to slow down, observe the world around them and reconnect with nature. Those moments often become the stories we remember—and the ones worth sharing in a letter, journal or postcard.

These winter school holidays, the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is inviting families to do exactly that through a series of ranger-guided adventures across Sydney’s national parks.

Led by experienced Discovery rangers, these hands-on experiences encourage children to explore native wildlife, discover Aboriginal culture, learn about conservation and develop a lifelong appreciation for the natural world.

Nature Sparks Creativity

Whether it’s spotting a lyrebird for the first time, listening to the sounds of the bush or watching the waves roll into a quiet beach, nature has a unique way of inspiring creativity.

After a day exploring a national park, why not encourage your child to:

  • Write a postcard to a grandparent about their adventure.
  • Keep a holiday nature journal.
  • Draw their favourite animal and write a short story about it.
  • Write a thank-you letter to a park ranger.
  • Create a “letter to my future self” describing everything they discovered.

Writing about real experiences helps children build observation skills, confidence and creativity while creating memories that last far longer than another afternoon spent on a device.

Turn Today’s Adventure into Tomorrow’s Memory

One of the simplest ways to make a family adventure even more meaningful is to capture it in writing.

A handwritten letter, a holiday journal or even a postcard sent to a friend becomes a keepsake that children can look back on for years to come. It encourages reflection, gratitude and storytelling—skills that are becoming increasingly valuable in our digital world.

This winter, consider pairing a day in nature with a few quiet moments at home to write about what you saw, heard and discovered. You may be surprised by the memories your children choose to preserve.
