The Canberra Writers Festival returns to the Museum of Australian Democracy (MoAD) on 25–26 October 2025, bringing with it a weekend of bold stories, fresh ideas, and conversations that matter.

Set inside the historic halls of Old Parliament House — where letters, debates and decisions once shaped the nation — the festival invites readers, writers, and big thinkers to come together for two days of thought-provoking events.

From diplomacy on the front line and conspiracy theories to untold stories of Australian women and the lasting legacy of Whitlam’s Dismissal, the program features an extraordinary lineup of writers, journalists, and changemakers. Each session is designed to spark discussion, question assumptions, and celebrate the written and spoken word.

Why Attend?

The Canberra Writers Festival is more than just a series of talks. It’s a chance to:

  • Experience history where it happened — inside the Senate, House of Representatives, and King’s Hall.

  • Hear the voices of leading authors and storytellers tackling themes of politics, culture, and identity.

  • Explore untold stories, from women who shaped Australia’s past to contemporary debates on profit, planet, and trust.

Highlights from the 2025 Program

  • Saturday 25 October: Wake Up! The Essay as Alarm Clock (Senate), The USA, Trump and Friends (House of Representatives), Conspiracy vs. Trust (Senate).

  • Sunday 26 October: Whitlam: Unleashed and Unvarnished (House of Representatives), Code of Silence: Aussie Women Who Helped Win the War (House of Representatives), Whitlam’s Dismissal: On These Very Steps (Senate).
