Having a pen pal and writing more can help ease anxiety, loneliness and even relieve stress. Yet spend five minutes Googling “pen pals” and the articles and studies are either geared towards children and tweens, the elderly, or even prisoners. Many mental health charities also offer pen pal schemes to support people through particular challenges such as depression. From me, with love: the lost art of letter writing

Three years ago, novelist Jon McGregor invited strangers to send him a letter in the post. Scribbled notes and love letters are still landing on the doormat…Our first letter was from Magnus Mills. It came in a plain brown envelope, and was handwritten on a plain sheet of white A4. “Dear J,” it began. “Thanks for asking and I’m really very flattered, but I don’t think I’ll be able to supply a handwritten letter.” It went on to explain the ways his time was taken up with work or with thinking about work. It was thoughtful and well-written, and concluded…

Write a letter to your old home before moving

Dear Home, It feels strange writing to you, as if you were just bricks and walls—but you’ve never been just that. You’ve been the place where life unfolded quietly, day by day. Before the removalists arrive and the last box is carried out, I wanted to pause and say something I didn’t realise needed saying until now… thank you. Thank you for the mornings filled with soft light through the windows. For the familiar creaks in the floor that somehow felt comforting. For holding laughter, conversations, and even the difficult days within your walls. You were there for all of…

Dear Neighbours, By the time you read this, the boxes will be packed, the moving truck booked, and the removalists scheduled to arrive early in the morning. You’ll likely recognise the familiar signs—stacked cardboard boxes, neatly labelled rooms, and that quiet anticipation that always comes with moving house. We wanted to take a moment, not just to say goodbye, but to reflect on what this transition really means. Like many people, we spent weeks searching for the best removalists near us, comparing affordable moving companies, and reading reviews to find reliable furniture removalists. Whether it’s a local move just down…

Launching on Valentine’s Day, the project will see the digital release of hundreds of thousands of personal letters, diaries and other handwritten documents. That includes the beginning of Dorothy and Mac’s 70-year love story, which was penned in hundreds of love letters spanning five years. Their romance began in 1937, when a 17-year-old Mac met a 14-year-old Dorothy, or – as he liked to call her – his darling Dot. “He kept on asking me to go out…
