World Letter Writing Day is all about celebrating the joy of pen and paper — and that’s exactly what the Bureau of Correspondence, created by musician and community arts instigator Rose Turtle Ertler, sets out to do.

Designed to invigorate the dying art of handwritten letters, the Bureau offers playful, lo-fi, and slightly comedic letter writing sessions. It’s a chance for people to sit down and dedicate time to writing letters — to anyone they like. Whether it’s a heartfelt note to family, a nostalgic message to an old friend, or even a cheeky letter to a movie star, pop idol, or politician, the aim is simple: reconnect through words.

The sessions are free to attend, though participants are encouraged to bring a few coins if they’d like to purchase special stationery (an envelope or fancy paper is just 5c, cash only). Each gathering also features a quirky “stationery item of the week” available to borrow for a strictly timed ten minutes (yes, a bell will ring when your time is up, after you’ve filled in the official forms!).
